Boris Johnson holds crunch summit with European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen

Boris Johnson holds crunch summit with European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen”

The UK's decision not to seek an extension to the Brexit transition period is "no surprise", NI's First Minister Arlene Foster has said.

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove and the UK's chief negotiator, David Frost, will be with Mr Johnson with the UK's ambassador to the EU Sir Tim Barrow also expected to join in the call.

"We are mindful that the withdrawal agreement only permits an extension of the transition period if this has been agreed before the end of June". Britain formally left the European Union on January 31 and is now negotiating a trade agreement.

Mr Aiken said there has been no risk assessment of the implications of additional costs of trade with the "biggest market, that is the rest of the country".

"We are looking to agree a high quality free-trade agreement based on the agreements the European Union has already reached with other countries, but whatever happens we will be ready for 1 January when we will take back control of our laws, border and money", a Downing Street spokesman, according to PA.

They also said the United Kingdom government had "simply dismissed" the views of the devolved governments. Importers of most goods will be able to delay submitting customs declarations or paying tariffs for up to six months, though they will have to keep customs records.

Later, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier conceded that the bloc's hopes of extending the Brexit transition had been dashed.

While tariffs will need to be paid, payments can be deferred until the customs declarations have been made, and companies will need to consider how they account for Value-Added Tax on imported goods.

The second sample received additional information on potential delays to the supply of medicines and medicinal products in the event of a no-deal Brexit, and among this sample, the proportion thinking the transition period should extend increased to 65%, with 31% saying it should not extend.

The new trading regime will involve fresh infrastructure at ports and airports with a £50m support package to get an estimated 50,000 customs agents, freight forwards and other experts in place for 2021.

Mr Johnson is set to hold high-level meetings with Brussels leaders on Monday - speaking with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President David Sassoli, and European Council President Charles Michel - to demand "renewed energy and commitment" in talks which have so far resulted in a deadlock.

On Monday, Von der Leyen tweeted that the "EU is ready to intensify the talks", calling for an injection of "fresh momentum" into the negotiations. "In this context, we both agreed on accelerating the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement and to accelerate our work".
