Lady Antebellum becomes Lady A

Lady Antebellum becomes Lady A”

Lady Antebellum announced their name change Thursday.

Antebellum is a style of architecture.

The trio - Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood - announced yesterday that they were making this name change after growing aware of the meaning of 'antebellum, ' which they said they originally chose out of love for the handsome antebellum mansions in the South, with no understanding of its full meaning. The home was in Nashville and Kelly saw they were still trying to come up with names.

The original Lady A, whose real name is Anita White, blasted the country group in an Instagram post this Friday, saying: "How can you say Black Lives Matter and put your knee on the neck of another Black artist?" There's no question that Lady Antebellum is a much more well known artist - the Grammy-winning trio of Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood have sold more than 10 million albums thanks to hits like "Need You Now", "American Honey", and "Bartender".

How does Antebellum link to slavery?

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, White revealed that Lady Antebellum didn't contact her before announcing their name change, which took her completely by surprise.

"Our hearts have been stirred with conviction, our eyes opened wide to the injustices, inequality and biases black women and men have always faced and continue to face everyday".

"I can't imagine that they could go on Google and not see me there, you can go on Spotify and see me, go on Amazon and see me", White said.

The band vowed that their name change is just the first of many steps they will take in a commitment to "practice antiracism". "It shouldn't have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it".

However, only hours later after changing their name, one black woman was furious with the band. "But I'm not about to stop using my name", she told the news outlet. It's an opportunity for them to pretend they're not racist or pretend this means something to them. If not, Lewis says there is still a common law trademark where White could prove that she has been using the name for years via tour flyers, posters, and records.

According to her online biography, Lady A was nominated as Best Blues Performer of the Year 2020 by the Washington Blues Society.

Music attorney Bob Celestin, who has represented artists like Pusha T and Missy Elliot, told Rolling Stone, "It's about who is first to use a name".

"For them to not even reach out is pure privilege", White said. She tells Rolling Stone she holds a business trademark for Lady A LLC, but it's unclear if she actually owns the name. Sudden publicity for the Seattle blues singer Lady A might introduce curious listeners to "Catch Me on the Low", "Change the World" and other songs on Spotify. "I'm not going to lay down and let this happen to me". Now, blindspots we didn't even know existed have been revealed.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ After much personal reflection, band discussion, prayer and many honest conversations with some of our closest Black friends and colleagues, we have made a decision to drop the word "antebellum" from our name and move forward as Lady A, the nickname our fans gave us nearly from the start.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ When we set out together nearly 14 years ago, we named our band after the southern "antebellum" style home where we took our first photos.
