Trans Mountain says pipeline has restarted after crude oil spill in Abbotsford”

Sumas First Nation Chief Dalton Silver said Saturday's spill marked the fourth time in 15 years that the pipeline has spilled oil on their land.

Trans Mountain has confirmed that an unspecified amount of oil spilled from its existing pipeline.

The Canadian government-owned Trans Mountain pipeline has been restarted following the oil spill at a pump station in British Columbia, Trans Mountain Corp said late Sunday.

"Our main concern is for the cleanup of this spill and preventing further impacts to our territory".

A group opposed to the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline is pointing to a spill in Abbotsford as a signal of what could happen if the expanded pipeline goes through to Burnaby.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) said in a separate statement it had deployed an investigator to the spill site to gather more information.

A spokesman for Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O'Regan said the department is "monitoring the situation closely".

An alarm about the oil spill was received in the early hours of Saturday, after which the pipeline was shut down, but there was no threat to the local community.

The Trans Mountain pipeline carries about 300,000 barrels a day of crude oil and some fuels from Alberta to the Vancouver area, where it connects to a marine export terminal as well as to another line that supplies refineries in Washington state.

Leah George-Wilson, chief of Tsleil-Waututh Nation, said spills from the Trans Mountain pipeline-which the Canadian government purchased from Kinder Morgan in 2018 despite widespread opposition-are "inevitable, can't be fully cleaned up, and have devastating effects".
