Cineplex to reopen six Alberta theatres this month

Cineplex to reopen six Alberta theatres this month”

The company plans to reopen "as many of its locations as it can" across the country July 3.

Cineplex representative Sarah Van Lange said theatres in British Columbia would be among the second stage to open, with other provinces still to be determined.

Reserved seating will be implemented in every auditorium to ensure proper physical distancing, and core concessions will be operating.

Cinema operator Cineworld Group said today that some of its cinemas would reopen in the last week of June and expected all of them to reopen by July with enhanced sanitation procedures across all sites.

"Cineworld's decision to abandon the Transaction was a scenario that Cineplex had considered and planned for", Cineplex said in a press release.

Cineplex's shares fell $2.33 to close at $11.49 per share on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Cineplex will also be dealing the fallout of its failed $2.8-billion acquisition by United Kingdom -based theatre chain Cineworld PLC, which collapsed last week.

Cineworld said last week in announcing the deal was scotched that Cineplex had breached the deal terms and experienced an unspecified "material adverse effect" that caused the United Kingdom giant, which also owns US chain Regal, to pull out.

Cineworld did not specify what the breaches were, adding that a "material adverse effect" occurred with the Canadian company.

Cineplex has announced plans to reopen the city's Rec Room following a three month closure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While a trickle of smaller movies have played on big screens over the past few months, largely at drive-in theatres, Hollywood studios have been reluctant to return to business as usual without confidence that people are willing to visit their local cinemas. Warner Bros. will roll out Christopher Nolan's Tenet on July 31 with a third Bill & Ted movie due out in August.

The world is about to get a bit more fun out here in Calgary. Chinese officials greenlit many local theatres to reopen, only to force them closed again over concerns of a second wave of infections.

Edmonton has six Cineplex locations and two Rec Room locations.
