EA Announces Space Dogfighting Game Star Wars Squadrons”

Microtransaction has always been a controversy amongst gamers, with Star Wars Battlefront II receiving backlash at launch, with the studio eventually dropping the feature.

EA Motive revealed the game today after leaks on the Xbox website last week gave away the name. As you'd imagine from a game with a heavy multiplayer focus, you'll be able to earn new weapons, hulls, engines, and shields as you rank up, alongside cosmetics that can change the appearance of your pilot, cockpit, and ship exterior.

We'll be getting our first look at Star Wars Squadron in action during EA Play Live on June 18th at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, so stay tuned for more updates soon. The narrative will feature a mixture of new faces and returning cameos to whet the appetite of even the most ardent Star Wars fan.

Furthermore, there are other enhancements. The game will have cross-play support, allowing console and PC players to meet each other.

Star Wars: Squadrons retails for $39.99 and is set for release this October 2nd on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ Video Game Debuts First Trailer

Compete in intense 5v5 dogfights, unite with your squadron to tip the scales in monumental fleet battles, and take off in a thrilling Star Wars™ single-player story.

Contrary to what many likely believed when Squadrons was first announced, the game isn't a multiplayer-only affair. But Squadrons is already the official title.

If you love the thought of piloting one of Star Wars' iconic ships, you're going to love this trailer.

Star Wars: Squadrons also features a single-player story that brings to life events following the Battle of Endor when the Rebel Alliance has successfully destroyed the Death Star II. It was then intended for the Nintendo GameCube. Before that, in 1994, there was Star Wars: TIE Fighter for PC which blended flight simulation with the act of being the villain in the popular space opera.

The jury's still out on that, though, as we've only seen a few snippets of the game just yet ahead of the gameplay reveal.
