EasyJet takes off this Monday with a fist flight to Glasgow”

Mostly internal flights from Gatwick, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Belfast are back on the cards from yesterday, with the first - a 7:00am departure from Gatwick off to Glasgow - leaving and arriving just as if everything was normal.

The first flight from the United Kingdom took off from London Gatwick at 07:00 this morning for Glasgow.

During the lockdown period the fleet of aircraft has been maintained in a flight ready condition to enable the airline to resume flights at the right time.

Passengers and crew will wear masks and planes will be deep-cleaned often.

This has raised hopes for airline chiefs that families will be able to go on holidays overseas this summer, and Lundgren is "optimistic" this will happen in the coming months.

Lundgren said there was scope to increase both the number of destinations and flight frequencies as the summer progressed, but whether the quarantine remained in place would be a factor.

He will travel on his first easyJet flight after the restart on Wednesday.

Asked if he would be anxious about his health if the plane is full, he replied: "I would feel 100% safe".

The Airbus A321neo - easyJet's largest aircraft - can seat 235 passengers. It has said Britain's quarantine could lead to even more cuts. It's being introduced at the same time as the rest of Europe is removing those types of restrictions.

EasyJet's initial schedule involves mainly domestic flying in the United Kingdom and France.

Capacity will be at about 30% of usual in the busy July to September season, easyJet said.

EasyJet plans to reopen half of its 1,022 routes by the end of next month, increasing to 75 per cent during August, the report said.

Ryanair intends to restore 40% of its flights from July 1, while British Airways is due to make a "meaningful return" to service next month.
