New Coronavirus Test Produces Result in 30 Minutes”

The samples were tested using the new method as well as by conventional the current one.

A new test that can diagnose Covid-19 in just 30 minutes by analysing urine, blood or saliva samples has been identified by scientists. A subset of these antibodies neutralized the virus by targeting diverse epitopes on the spike, with the two most potent ones targeting the domain that binds the host receptor.

COVID-19 can cause the brain to suffer from a lack of oxygen, or from clotting disorders that may lead to strokes.

"The silent spread of the virus makes it all the more challenging to control", says Eric Topol, MD, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and professor of Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research.

First and co-senior author Prem Lakshmanane, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at UNC, said, "We are now further streamlining our test into an cheap assay, so that instead of the test taking four to five hours to complete, our assay could be completed in about 70 minutes without compromising quality".

According to the team, the RT-LAMP technique is less expensive, has fewer barriers, and is faster than the standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing method that is now being used around the world to detect the Sars-Cov-2 virus in patients.

A large panel of human sera and hyperimmune sera from animals exposed to zoonotic CoVs was used to evaluate the RBD's performance as an antigen for reliable detection of SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies; by day 9 after the onset of symptoms "the recombinant SARS-CoV-2 RBD antigen was highly sensitive (98%) and specific (100%) for antibodies induced by SARS-CoVs". Assays for measuring neutralizing antibodies take about three days to complete and often require special high-containment facilities necessary for safely working with infectious viruses.

"It's important for the general public and physicians to be aware of this, because a SARS-COV-2 infection may present with neurologic symptoms initially, before any fever, cough or respiratory problems occur", said study lead author Igor Koralnik from Northwestern University in the US. "Commercial tests are critical, especially for making decisions about the clinical management of individual patients".
