"Both Twitter and Square are making #Juneteenth (June 19th) a company holiday in the USA, forevermore", Dorsey said in a tweet.

The head of Twitter and Square has said that both firms will honor Juneteenth as a company holiday in the United States.

Jack Dorsey also said Twitter was working to identify which days it made the most sense to recognize the end of slavery in other countries.

Mr Dorsey designed the announcement in a sequence of tweets, indicating it would be a "working day for celebration, schooling, and relationship".

Nearly every major company has released a statement in the wake of the George Floyd protests in support of Black Lives Matter.

Texas, as the most remote former slave state, was the last to receive the historic news, more two-and-a-half years after The Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863.
