Queen Latifah Supports Canceling ‘Gone with the Wind’ After Playing Hattie McDaniel

Queen Latifah Supports Canceling ‘Gone with the Wind’ After Playing Hattie McDaniel”

As you may have heard, HBO Max temporarily pulled Gone with the Wind from its streaming service because "to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of [its racist] depictions would be irresponsible", and they said it would "return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions".

Turner Classic Movies host Stewart explained in an op-ed for CNN that she will "provide an introduction placing the film in its multiple historical contexts". There are now three individual HBO apps, each catering to a specific use case, but now the company is attempting to consolidate them across all platforms.

HBO didn't respond when asked to confirm what Stewart said. "Gone With the Wind is a prime text for examining expressions of white supremacy in popular culture", Stewart wrote.

A mosaic depicting a scene from the film "Gone with the Wind" is shown on fencing surrounding the offices of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in Encino, Calif., in an October 30, 2007, file photograph.

The discourse around Gone With the Wind is exhausting in many ways, because ever since the movie's release in 1939, there have been Black audiences talking about the issues with the way it depicts the lives of enslaved Black people before and after the Civil War.

As for Gone with the Wind, it's a movie and book that is not for or about Black people. "If people are really doing their homework, we may be poised to have our most informed, honest and productive national conversations yet about Black lives on screen and off", Stewart said. However, WarnerMedia hasn't yet finalized deals to bring the new Max catalog to Roku or Amazon streaming devices, so the HBO Now app on those platforms is being renamed to just 'HBO.' WarnerMedia told The Verge that the branding switch will roll out over the coming months. Bob Greenblatt, who heads the media company, said in a radio interview last week that pulling the film "was sort of a no-brainer".

Queen Latifah says Gone With the Wind should be gone forever following HBO Max's temporary removal of the 1939 film that's always been criticized for romanticizing slavery and the Civil War-era American South. "So the opportinities of that time and the way those in power in that business were relegating us and marginalizing us and not allowing us to grow and thrive after that, you know, was just bad". I can only liken it to what it was like for me as a kid, as a teenager - young 20s, early '90s when there was apartheid in South Africa, and we weren't with that.

"We took it off and we're going to bring it back with the proper context".
