Android Flagships Might Become Even More Expensive in 2021

Android Flagships Might Become Even More Expensive in 2021”

The full package (including the hardware needed for wireless connectivity) will cost $250, up from $150-160 for the Snapdragon 865. The price is said to include both the application processor and the Snapdragon X60 5G modem.

The Snapdragon 865 is now shipping to manufacturers for between $150 and $160.

The post goes on to say that Xiaomi, known for its value for money handsets, is in the middle of a "fierce debate" over how it will price its 2021 flagships running the Snapdragon 875 chipset. The new chipset will certainly be more powerful than the Snapdragon 865.

Android flagships have been nearly ridiculously priced this year, with traditionally affordable premium phones from Xiaomi and OnePlus all seeing significant jumps in prices, relative to their predecessors.

The standalone chipset will also be rumored to cost $130, whereas the Snapdragon 865 is said to cost $80. At that process node, 171.3 million transistors can squeeze into a square mm.

The latter figure is more important here since it appears Qualcomm's new policy is to make the purchase of the entire chipset mandatory.

The source reports that deliberations are on-going at Xiaomi regarding the price of their future flagships. This is one of the choices that Android phone manufacturers have.

This is because apart from cost of components, the final price of a phone takes into account R&D, marketing, design, and so on, but ultimately the increase in the price of components will no doubt lead to a more expensive phone.
