China: 4 lakh people under lockdown as coronavirus cases rise”

Now, only one person from each family will be allowed to go out once a day to purchase necessities such as food and medicine, the county's epidemic prevention task force said in a statement. As the number of cases of COVID-19 in Beijing climbed in recent days following an outbreak linked to a wholesale food market, officials announced they had identified hundreds of thousands of people who needed to be tested for the coronavirus.

No non-residents will be allowed to enter buildings, communities, or villages.

The move comes after another 14 cases of the virus were reported in the past 24 hours in Beijing, taking the total to 311 since mid-June and spurring the testing of millions of residents.

Since June 11 when Beijing reported its first case in the current outbreak, stemming from a sprawling wholesale food centre in the southwest of the capital, 297 people in the city of more than 20 million have contracted the virus.

The total number of recorded COVID-19 cases in China now stands at 84,743, with 4,641 deaths.

About a third of the total cases in the new outbreak have been linked to beef and mutton section in the market. Businesses in Anxin county had supplied freshwater fish to the market, state news agency Xinhua reported.

The National Health Commission reported 21 new confirmed infections in mainland China on Friday, up from 13 a day earlier and the highest since Monday.

While this is a small number compared with the thousands of daily cases in the US or South America, China reacted quickly to contain any spread.

The NHC also reported six new asymptomatic cases as of the end of June 28, compared with seven such cases a day earlier. The virus has since sickened 10 million globally and killed over half a million. It has only added around 4,700 cases since.

China has reinstated a strict lockdown near Beijing, affecting around 400,000 people, after a small surge in cases.
