Dustin Johnson hangs on to win Travelers Championship”

A PGA Tour statement issued shortly after Dustin Johnson's victory at TPC River Highlands read: "As part of the PGA TOUR's pre-charter testing process, Tour player Dylan Frittelli tested positive for COVID-19".

He took the lead on the ninth after drilling a 126-yard second shot to within five feet of the pin before rolling in the simplest of birdie putts. 8-10. He went up three over Streelman when Brendon Todd fell out of contention with a messy triple at 12. From there, what should have been an uneventful finish was anything but. Johnson promptly pulled his drive OB on 13, leading to a bogey.

"Whenever I get a two or three-week stretch in a row, I tend to be playing better by the end of it", he told reporters.

He narrowly avoided disaster on 15, when he was forced to remove his shoes and stand in a pond to hit his ball, which landed in the damp turf next to the water. Right after he managed to save his par, the horn blew at TPC River Highlands, halting play for 58 minutes, with DJ sitting on a two-shot lead with three to play.

Out of the break, Johnson finished bogey-par-par to win by one.

Fritelli is now ranked 105 in the world and achieved his maiden PGA Tour victory past year at the John Deere Classic, a win that earned him a millions dollar purse. Following a runner-up finish to Brooks Koepka last May at the PGA Championship, DJ fell into what was by his standards a lengthy slump, recording just two top-10 finishes in 14 starts wrapped around arthroscopic knee surgery last September.

A delay for lightning could not derail Dustin Johnson as he secured victory at the Travelers Championship for his first win on the PGA Tour in 16 months.

He has already been denied the chance to defend his John Deer Classic title after the tournament was cancelled for this year and replaced by a new event at Muirfield Village in OH ahead of The Memorial, hosted by Jack Nicklaus.

Best of the rest: The 2014 victor, Streelman found himself just one back when he birdied 13 at just about the same time DJ went OB left at 12.

Johnson was tied for 79th after the opening round on Thursday, the lowest first-round position by a victor in the tournament's history.

Just when Johnson looked like he might cruise to victory, he hooked his tee shot out of bounds at the par-5 13th and needed to make a clutch 7-foot putt for bogey. Todd shot a 75 to tie for 11th at 13 under.

Johnson's two-stroke cushion got cut in half when he bogeyed 16, but he managed two pars coming home to finish at 19-under 261, holding off Streelman, the 2014 Travelers champ, who shot a bogey-free 67. His third-place finish was just enough to earn him a special temporary card and unlimited exemptions for the rest of the season. Johnson rolled in a couple of short birdie putts at Nos. Any time you're mentioned with those names, it's very good.

"It was a long time between wins though", Johnson said.

"It seems like he's starting to play really well and make some putts and we're both kind of peaking this week at the same time, so hopefully we can both go low".
