HK security law set to pass on Tuesday

HK security law set to pass on Tuesday”

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, the largest party in the city's legislature, denounced the act as an escalation of United States meddling in the affairs of the Hong Kong SAR.

U.S. Senators passed legislation Thursday imposing sanctions on people or companies that back efforts or profit off of China's efforts to exert security in Hong Kong.

Critics say that the law could be used to crackdown on dissent and criticism of Beijing.

Zhao reiterated China's insistence that the law was "purely an internal affair of China, and no foreign country has the right to interfere".

The event came a day after Hong Kong police refused permission for an annual march that is held on July 1 to mark the passage of the city from British to Chinese rule.

Scuffles broke out with chanting and slogans directed towards police and officers using pepper spray on parts of the crowd.

Hundreds of Hong Kongers marched silently through the city's streets on Sunday in protest against the looming national security legislation to be implemented by the mainland Chinese government.

China's National People's Congress is now in the final stages of drafting the law - details of which have not been revealed - and is expected to pass it this week, perhaps even by Tuesday.

Article 23 of Hong Kong's mini-constitution, the Basic Law, says the city must enact a bill to prohibit "treason, secession, sedition (and) subversion" against the Chinese government.

The announcement is the latest administration move against Beijing as tensions between the two capitals have steadily increased over a slew of issues, including but not limited to trade, the telecom giant Huawei's 5G technology, media freedoms and designations, the South China Sea, the coronavirus and the question of Hong Kong's autonomy.

The national security law is expected to pass before Tuesday.

Last month, President Trump responded to China's plans by saying he was initiating a process to eliminate special economic treatment that has allowed Hong Kong to remain a global financial centre since its handover by Britain in 1997.

During the meeting, Shen Chunyao, one of seven deputy directors at the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC standing committee, presented a review of the national security law, according to Xinhua.

Hong Kong police confirmed the arrest of 53 people due to unlawful assembly on its Facebook page at around 7 p.m. local time.

Today, the Senate stood up to the communist regime in Beijing and stood with the people of Hong Kong, Toomey said.

"In response. China has chose to impose visa restrictions on U.S. individuals with egregious conduct on HK related issues".

"We urge the United States side to immediately correct its mistakes, withdraw the decisions and stop interfering in China's domestic affairs".

"Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and the full implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, as well as respect for human rights, are of fundamental importance".
