Iran issues arrest warrant for Trump over Qassem Soleimani killing

Authorities in Iran have approved a measure to ask Interpol to put US President Donald Trump on its global Red Notice of wanted persons over the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, Iranian media including Mehr News and the Fars News Agency have reported, citing judicial officials.

The arrest warrant listing "murder and terrorism charges" has been issued and forwarded to Interpol for immediate action, he added.

The US killed General Soleimani, who oversaw the Revolutionary Guard Corps's expeditionary Quds Force, and others in the January attack near Baghdad International Airport.

Trump, who was vacationing at his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, when news of the successful attack was first announced, sent out a tweet of an American flag.

In the early hours of January 8, the IRGC fired dozens of ballistic missiles at a military airbase hosting USA forces in Iraq as part of its promised "tough revenge" for the US terrorist attack.

Alqasimehr stressed that Iran would continue to pursue Trump's prosecution even after his presidency ends.

He said Iran had asked Interpol to issue a "red notice" for Trump and the other individuals the Islamic Republic accuses of taking part in the killing of Soleimani.

While red notices are non-binding, they are common practice when wanted fugitives or people suspected of crimes flee across borders.

An Interpol red notice is a request circulated to police around the world to locate and arrest a person wanted either by a country or an worldwide tribunal, pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

Interpol, based in Lyon, France, did not immediately respond to Iran's demand.
