Japanese firm invents "smart face mask" that connects to mobile phones

Japanese firm invents

The mask, said to be capable of sending text messages via speech, is being marketed by its developer, Donut Robotics as a way to remain connected during the Coronavirus era.

As deal with coverings become the norm amid the coronavirus pandemic, Japanese startup Donut Robotics has developed an world-wide-web-linked "smart mask" that can transmit messages and translate from Japanese into 8 other languages.

Donut came up with new innovative ideas for the masks as they were in the search to develop a product to ease pandemic pressure on people.

The company says it has already prepared a series of massive upgrades that would be rolled out in a revised version of the c-mask, including AR and VR support.

"We labored challenging for years to produce a robotic and we have made use of that technological innovation to produce a solution that responds to how the coronavirus has reshaped society", stated Taisuke Ono, the main govt of Donut Robotics. All is not lost; however, as technologists at their company were able to re-engineer their robot translator technology and allow it to be used in their newly-developed "smart masks".

Selling for about $40 per mask, Donut Robotics is marketing the product to a demographic that didn't exist until recently. The startup plans to sell these masks in China, Europe and the U.S. as well. The company's first round of orders is expected to ship to buyers in Japan in September. Additionally, Ono added that a monthly subscription service for the product's speech function via a downloadable app is planned as a means to generate revenue for the company. Donut Robotics then salvaged some of the technology used for the robots to develop a prototype of the c-mask within a month's time.

Ono raised 28 million yen ($260,000) for development by attempting to sell Donut Robotics shares through Japanese crowdfunding site Fundinno. He said that we set our initial target of 7 million yen within three minutes and closed it after 37 minutes, during which we had collected 28 million yen.
