Miami's famous beaches closing for Fourth of July amid coronavirus concerns”

Florida reported on Friday that there were 8,942 confirmed new infections - which was the largest single-day increase of cases since April 15, when NY reported 11,571 cases, according to Insider science and environment reporter Aylin Woodward. He warned the closure could be extended if conditions don't improve and people don't follow rules created to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The announcement follows a surge in coronavirus cases in Florida; on Friday, the state reported almost 9,000 new positive test results. So far, there have been more than 122,000 cases in Florida of the coronavirus, which has been blamed for more than 3,300 deaths.

The planned closures from July 3 to July 7 come after Florida saw an uptick in coronavirus infections.

The mayor's directive came as governor Ron DeSantis, who has repeatedly portrayed economic damage from coronavirus lockdowns as greater risk than risks from the virus itself, said he would not order Floridians to wear face coverings. Numerous new cases of the virus have been detected in young people, and not in elderly persons who are typically more at risk of infection.

Sunday's move by Broward mirrored Miami-Dade's response to leaps in COVID-19 case numbers and positive test rates over the last week and a half. The mayor claimed he had seen both businesses and people ignoring safety measures against infection. "If people are not going to be responsible and protect themselves and others from this pandemic, then the government is forced to step in and restore common sense to save lives", said Gimenez.

The beaches and parks will be closed starting July 3 through July 7, said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez in a news release. His order also will impact fireworks viewing in celebration of the Fourth of July.

The closures are for beaches in all cities and unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade.

For residents planning on seeing fireworks, they must be viewed from inside homes or a parked vehicle.

Mayor Gimenez said the Miami-Dade County Police Department will "continue to be out in force this weekend to close establishments that are flaunting the social distancing and masks rules and capacity limits".

The number of confirmed new coronavirus cases per day in the USA hit an all-time high of 40,000 according to figures released by Johns Hopkins on Friday, eclipsing the mark first set during one of the deadliest stretches of the pandemic back in late April.
