US fighter jets intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft off Alaska #114749”

The New York Times reported Friday that USA intelligence concluded months ago a Russian military intelligence unit offered bounties to the Taliban to kill American troops operating in Afghanistan.

F-22s intercepted two Russian IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft entering the Alaskan Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the late hours of June 24.

But they stayed in global airspace and did not enter USA or Canadian airspace, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Twitter. The Southern Military district is responsible for security in the Black Sea region.

"This year alone, NORAD forces have identified and intercepted Russian military aircraft including bombers, fighters, and maritime patrol aircraft on ten separate occasions when they have flown into the ADIZ", said NORAD commander Gen. Terrence J.

The planes were heading toward Russian Federation, according to the statement, but "immediately changed ... direction" after the intercept.

US and Russian aircraft have been engaged in similar interceptions in the Baltic Sea region too over the past few months.

Once intercepted, the USA aircraft changed direction, said the defense ministry, while the Su-30 returned to the base.

The intercept Wednesday off Alaska was the ninth in 2020 and the fifth in June, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which guards USA and Canadian airspace.

No one was immediately available at the Pentagon or U.S. European Command for comment.

Meanwhile, Stars and Stripes reported a Russian defense ministry statement announced a Russian fighter jet intercepted two us reconnaissance aircraft and a refueling tanker as they flew in "neutral" airspace over the Black Sea.

NORAD's interception Saturday is the second time this week Russian planes entered Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, the last time being Wednesday, the Hill reported.
