West Indies team to sport Black Lives Matter emblem on Test jersey

West Indies team to sport Black Lives Matter emblem on Test jersey”

Head coach Phil Simmons will spend five days in isolation as a precaution after leaving the secure West Indies facility here to attend a funeral on Friday, media reports have said.

West Indies captain Jason Holder has said that his team will sport a Black Lives Matter emblem on their collars when the side will begin its three-match Test series against England in July, ESPNcricinfo reported.

"We have come to England to retain the Wisden Trophy but we are very conscious of happenings around the world and the fight for justice and equality".

Premier League soccer clubs have been wearing the logo since the season's restart as a tribute to protests against racial injustice following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25. We believe we have a duty to show solidarity and also to help raise awareness.

Deeney said: "Alisha and I are immensely proud to be asked and take part in a monumental moment in world sport, this fantastic decision by the West Indies cricket team to show their support for Black Lives Matter".

Holder said sportsmen and women could influence opinion and be a force for change.

"He took the job at a young age and we are starting to see him at the peak of his career". There must be equality and there must be unity.

"It is going to be a different challenge for everybody, there will be times when the mind might drift further than it would in a normal Test match but that is where we have got to be so strong as individuals to not let that happen".

Deeney said it was an "amazing decision" by the West Indies team.

"Alisha and I are immensely proud to be asked and take part in a monumental moment in world sport, this awesome decision by the West Indies cricket team to show their support for Black Lives Matter", he said.

Last week, the European Central Bank confirmed all 702 Covid-19 tests carried out in preparation for the three-match series - at the Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford - had come back negative.
