Why Windows 10 Version 2004 Comes Without Update Deferral Options

Why Windows 10 Version 2004 Comes Without Update Deferral Options”

What Microsoft called "quality updates", another name for the monthly Patch Tuesday security updates, could be postponed by up to 30 days.

With Windows 10's May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced the ability to defer all Windows 10 updates, including feature updates, for up to 35 days via the Windows Update settings. The reboots are caused by a failure of the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) file (lsass.exe), and Microsoft says Windows 10 versions 1809 and newer are now affected.

However, there is a workaround, update deferral can be configured by business users of Windows 10 via group policies. Once we arrive we will be able to select when we receive compilations of preliminary versions and feature updates. If you want to keep deferring updates, you'll need to change local Group Policy to match. Microsoft is expected to announce general availability for Windows 10 version 2004 later this summer, albeit the company uses a very cautious approach to make sure that everything is running according to the plan.

In the June 23-revised support document, Microsoft said the disappearance of the deferral controls was "to enable all devices to make the most" of the decision previous year to cede timing control of feature upgrades to everyone, notably those running Home. The text indicating that intent appears as a short entry in a long "What's New" document on Windows 10 version 2004, which was noted in a Wednesday ZDNet article by veteran Microsoft reporter Mary Jo Foley.

The result for those who didn't pull the Download and install now trigger: Microsoft instituted annual upgrades.

The new option is only available for Windows 10 Pro and other enterprise versions and allows you to set a target version of Windows 10 that you want to use.

The latest KB4557957 or KB4560960 updates are intended to patch several of these problems, but it looks like they're causing nearly as many problems as the bug-filled system updates they were meant to fix. While these are third-party and Recuva has paid features, they do have GUIs.

"As I see it, the issue they are trying to address shouldn't be happening in the first place", Bradley said.

As detailed in the complaints which have appeared on Microsoft's support forum (as spotted by Windows Latest), what's happening is that Windows Defender is detecting items in its scan history (previously detected PUAs) as if they were actual PUAs.
