Worldwide Covid-19 death toll passes 500,000

There are more than 10 million people across the world confirmed to have COVID-19, according to the most recent data available from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Brazil with more than 57,000 deaths and 1.3 million Covid-19 cases is the second worst-hit nation followed by Russian Federation and India. More than 7 million residents were tested in Beijing earlier this month, after a cluster of infections there was linked to a large food market.

After a massive increase of more than one million cases since June 21, data now suggests 499,000 people have died from the virus worldwide - with more than 43,500 fatalities in the UK.

Brazil, for example, with more than 1.3 million cases, trails only the United States in its confirmed COVID-19 case tallies.

According to The Associated Press, numerous new cases have been reported in rural areas.

The surge in the number of cases comes as countries around the world roll back lockdown restrictions that were imposed in a bid to curb the spread of the disease.

In recent weeks, cases in the U.S. have spiked as new epicenters have emerged particularly in heavily populated areas in southern states.

Several US states, including Florida, Arizona and Texas, broke new records for infections on Saturday.

For more than 16 days in a row as of Saturday, Texas set a record for hospitalizations related to COVID-19, according to The Washington Post. South Carolina, Nevada and Georgia also reported record daily tallies.

Republicans, like President Trump who won't wear one in public, have politicized their existence.

Other countries have been more successful in containing the virus.

Hopes that the country was beating the disease were dashed by a spike in infections which saw 5,000 fresh cases reported on Friday.

Texas reported more than 17,000 confirmed new cases over the past three days, with a record high of almost 6,000 on Thursday. However, with testing still limited in some parts of the world, the actual number of global cases could be significantly higher.

Experts, including US Surgeon General Jerome Adams, have said some US states may have prematurely opened businesses, contributing to current spikes.
