Xbox Series S Will Reportedly Be Revealed in August

Xbox Series X development docs, distributed courtesy of a leaker on Twitter, tease a long-rumoured second Xbox Series X. As the Verge's Tom Warren notes, the second console, code-named Lockhart, has been rumoured for some time. They're both powerful consoles, but Microsoft has the much faster (and not just "technically") console as it is almost 20% more powerful - if you wanted to use the TFLOPs argument, that is.

According to Eurogamer's sources, Microsoft had originally pegged June as its announcement month for the alleged lower priced, lower powered version of the Xbox Series X, using an E3 showcase as a space to explain the console while showing it playing the same next-gen games as the more powerful console.

Obviously, Microsoft has not revealed any details related to the so-called Xbox Series S but rumours of a cheaper alternative to Xbox Series X aren't new.

For the business strategy point of view, the Xbox Series S aka Lockhart makes a lot of sense. It's expected to have a 1TB NVMe SSD, 16GB of pricey GDDR6 RAM (13.5 GB usable), an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, and a next-generation RDNA 2 GPU from AMD capable of putting out a whopping 12.155 teraflops.

The Xbox Series X has already got the PS5 beat when it comes to technical specifications, but apparently the gap could be even wider on paper, if Microsoft had copied Sony's approach to clock speeds.

All three special edition mock-ups look absolutely stunning, and Sony fans who were on the fence with the official white console are leaning into the hardware more, now that they can visualise what it might look like decked out in their favourite game's colours and themes. Of course, the biggest difference between the two models is the price.

First up is the Cyberpunk 2077 PlayStation 5 sporting the neon yellow and blue that are now synonymous with the title, and finished off with circuit board-style detailing.

Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 will hit retail shelves later this year.
