European Union allowing New Zealanders to travel to Europe from tomorrow”

As Europe prepares to reopen its borders, Nigeria has been excluded from the list of countries whose travelers could be received on July 1.

If the Chinese government offers a reciprocal travel deal for citizens of European Union countries, the EU will add China to the "safe list".

As had been widely expected, the United States - where the coronavirus is now resurging - will not be on that list.

Other countries include, Mongolia, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Palau, Paraguay, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Serbia, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vatican City, Venezuela, Vietnam and Zambia.

The list is included in a set of recommendations from the EU Council to member states, which set out criteria for countries to meet before their nationals are allowed entry to the bloc and the methodology for meeting that criteria. The list also reportedly includes European Union citizens who would be treated the same way as United Kingdom nationals until the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31.

On Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern warned that those planning to leave the country for "non-essential" reasons during the Covid-19 pandemic might be left picking up their isolation or quarantine bill on return.

European Union envoys in Brussels worked over the weekend to narrow down the exact criteria for countries to be included, mostly based on their ability to manage the spread of the disease.

The Commission also recommended that from July 1, the Member States should start permitting third-country nationals to enter the European Union, if the COVID-19 situation permits such a step to be taken.
