Global coronavirus cases exceed 10 million

Global coronavirus cases exceed 10 million”

The United States has recorded not quite 129,000 deaths from the outbreak, almost one fourth of the known worldwide total.

The first death linked to the new coronavirus was reported on January 10 in Wuhan in China, before infections and fatalities surged in Europe, then the United States, and later Russian Federation.

More than three dozen US states were seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases, according to a Reuters tally on Thursday and the nation set a new record with more than 51,000 infections in a single day as a fresh wave of the pandemic spread across the nation.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blamed the surge on "social interactions" among young people at parties, beaches, bars, swimming pools and elsewhere, as well as a more "robust" testing program.

U.S. is witnessing a second flare-up, mostly affecting southern states - with the exception of California in the west - that had either lifted their restrictions early or were reluctant to enforce them fully, such as Texas, whose governor Gregg Abbott, a Republican, had prevented his mayors and other city officials from making the use of masks mandatory.

In California, another epicenter of the epidemic in the United States, the number of positive test results increased by 37% and the number of hospitalizations - by 56% over the past two weeks.

States that reopened their economies the earliest and fastest after the pandemic struck - and against the advice of federal health authorities - are now experiencing the highest caseloads.

Despite all the grim news on Thursday, Donald Trump claimed that Thursday's strong jobs data was evidence that America was recovering from the pandemic.

"Today's announcement proves that our economy is roaring back", Trump told reporters at the White House. "The crisis is being handled".

Cases have been skyrocketing across Latin America.

"We haven't seen anything like this for the last 102 years in 1918, and this is something that we need to take very seriously because there's so many implications of it". At least 89% of ICU beds are now in use in the state. There are more than 87,000 diagnosed cases of COVID-19 in Arizona, with at least 1,764 deaths.

In Asia, however, swift lock downs have largely made progress - including in Beijing, which said Friday it was lifting most travel restrictions after successfully containing a new outbreak.

Traders have been balancing hopes for an economic recovery with surging coronavirus infections, particularly in the United States, where infections are rising in the majority of states. Two US studies have showed it can reduce the length of hospital stays. However the United States announced earlier this week that it had purchased 92 percent of all remdesivir production by the California-based Gilead laboratory until the end of September.
