Norfolk had 600 more coronavirus cases than reported at height of pandemic

Norfolk had 600 more coronavirus cases than reported at height of pandemic”

Globally there have been 10.7 million confirmed cases and over 517,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins' count.

The daily US tally of cases stood at 55,274 late on Thursday, topping the previous single-day record of 54,771 set by Brazil on June 19.

Hospitalisations rose in more than a dozen states and intensive care units in Houston, Texas, one of the worst-affected cities, were running out of room.

More than a dozen states, including Florida, California, Texas and Arizona, broke single-day records in new coronavirus cases this week. The United States alone has recorded about 2.76 million cases.

One major U-turn came from the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, a Republic and ally of president Donald Trump.

The surge has been blamed in part on Americans not covering their faces or following other social distancing rules as states lifted their lockdowns over the past few weeks.

Nebraska and South Dakota were the only states outside the Northeast with a downward trend in cases. At the same time cases have increased three times in Nevada and five times in Idaho. According to authorities, Florida reported over infections 95,000 new cases in June even as it closed bars and beaches.

"However, so far this data has been made available on a confidential and unverified basis restricted to our director of public health, so I welcome this increased transparency from Government which enables the full range of positive tests to be reported clearly".

Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned earlier this week the daily increase in new US cases could reach 100,000 without nationwide measures to slow the rate. If this continues, he said Arizona "is soon going to be in considerable trouble". It reported 6,563 cases Wednesday.

Figures in Norfolk and Suffolk have gone up by more than 1,500 following the new methodology for accumulating figures.
