Apple iPhone 11’s local manufacturing begins at Foxconn’s Chennai plant”

iPhone 11 is being assembled at Foxconn's Chennai plant. This is the first time the tech giant will assembling a flagship device in the country.

According to a new report on The Economic Times, the company will step up the production in phases. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted that Apple's iPhone SE was manufactured in India in 2017, iPhone 6S in 2018, iPhone 7 and XR in 2019 and iPhone 11 in 2020.

Wistron, which has locally assembled older iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 models in the past in its Bangalore plant, now assembles iPhone XR units in India. "It's only a humble beginning".

According to The Economic Times, Apple's move is meant to leverage the country's Made in India initiative.

While Apple has not officially commented on the news, it's understood that it is also considering making plans to produce its newer, smaller iPhone SE at a plant in Bengaluru. Foxconn also makes phones for Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi in India, at its Andhra Pradesh manufacturing facilities.

Going forward, Apple may consider exporting the India-made iPhone 11s and we are yet to get a confirmation on that.

Apple has Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron as suppliers for its iPhone models.

Foxconn said earlier this month that it planned to invest $1bn in India while Apple plans to open its first physical store in the country in the coming months, as well as an online store.

"We have already seen the success of the iPhone XR in India after it received a significant price drop from Rs 76,900 to Rs 59,900".
