Chiefs RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opting out to continue work as orderly

Chiefs RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opting out to continue work as orderly”

Due to the time requirements of playing in the NFL, Duvernay-Tardif has not completed a medical residency but made global headlines this off-season when he chose to work as an orderly at a long-term care facility in Quebec, one of the areas of life most hard hit by the virus.

Duvernay-Tardif played 14 games last season for the Chiefs. Duvernay-Tardif penned an op-ed in Sports Illustrated about his experience working as a doctor on the front lines during the pandemic.

"If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients".

Duvernay-Tardif tweeted his decision Friday.

"This is one of the most hard decisions I have had to make in my life but I must follow my convictions", he wrote. Tardif said in a statement on Friday that he will continue his work as a frontline medical professional but "cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love". The agreement includes a two-tiered opt-out plan for players. Veterans such as Duvernay-Tardif were expected to arrive in the coming days. He was slated to to be paid a $2.75 million base salary in 2020, according to Over the Cap, so he's giving up at least $2.6 million to sit out the season.

Because he has made a decision to voluntarily opt out this year, under terms agreed to earlier on Friday between the National Football League and NFLPA Duvernay-Tardif will receive a $150,000 salary, instead of the above contracted earnings.

Duvernay-Tardif has dealt with a series of injuries since signing the deal. He is the only starter who won't be returning off the Super Bowl LIV championship offense.

"I want to thank everyone in the Kansas City Chiefs organisation for their support and understanding".

The season is set to start on September 10, with training camps with strict safety protocols set to open for players on July 28.
