Coronavirus: Care home visits to resume in England

Coronavirus: Care home visits to resume in England”

Visitors will not be allowed to enter residents' rooms, unless they are dying, but will be able to visit in designated areas of a home, such as a conservatory, or in gardens.

Starting on Wednesday, indoor visits at the City of Toronto's operated long-term care homes will be permitted again for family members and loved ones.

Risk assessments will be undergone prior to homes being reopened, the Department of Health and Social Care said.

Care providers are asked to consider outdoor visits, which has been seen at a number of Norfolk care homes.

"They're understandably exhausted and we as a society need to repay our debt to them and recognise what they've been through".

Matt Hancock, health secretary, said: "I know how painful it has been for those in care homes not being able to receive visits from their loved ones throughout this period".

Long-term care homes not now experiencing an outbreak of the novel coronavirus have allowed outdoor visits since June.

Families will be able to be reunited after months.

Prof Eugene Milne, Newcastle's director of public health, said officials were fast-tracking plans to allow visitors into care homes as soon as possible.

"They've also experienced unimaginable heartache after seeing residents die in extreme circumstances and also the higher death toll in some care homes across the country".

Gray says visitors for outdoor visits are no longer required to attest to home staff that they have tested negative for COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.

The association surveyed managers at 25 homes across Sheffield, representing 20% of all care beds in the city.

If there is an outbreak in the home or evidence of increased transmission in the community which leads to a local lockdown, care homes should rapidly impose visiting restrictions. "We are at a loss to understand why the Department of Health and Social Care can not act quickly in a crisis or why it is deaf to the comments and input from the sector".

"The effect of not being able to see friends and family has been very hard and very upsetting for many - both for the people who access care and support, and for their loved ones who have been isolated".

It is understood care homes will have discretion to work with families so individuals can visit their loved ones separately, for example if an elderly person has more than one child.
