Dodgers, Mookie Betts agree on blockbuster 12-year deal

Dodgers, Mookie Betts agree on blockbuster 12-year deal”

$115 million of that will be deferred and another $65 million will come in the form of a signing bonus, which won't be taxed. The exact details are, as of yet, unknown.

Mookie Betts is scheduled to become a free agent for the first time in his career after this season, but the Los Angeles Dodgers are apparently on the verge of convincing the star outfielder that there is no need to test the market. Then, a few minutes ago ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Betts and the Dodgers "are deep into negotiations on a long-term contract".

Merloni, a former Red Sox player who now hosts a radio show, said back in January that Boston offered Betts a 10-year, $300 million extension before deciding to trade him to the Dodgers. Both Downs and Wong are members of the 60-man player pool of eligible players for the 2020 season.

Betts and the Dodgers have struck baseball's first big-money deal since the coronavirus pandemic decimated the sport's economics.

The contract extension trails only the 12-year agreement for $426.5m that Mike Trout finalized last year with the Los Angeles Angels, and follows the record-setting deal worth as much as $503m the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs signed earlier this month with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Betts also brings elite defense to the table, having earned four consecutive Gold Gloves and twice winning the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award as a right fielder (2016, 2018). Over the course of his six-year Major League Baseball career he has hit.301/.374/.519 and has averaged 28 homers and 96 RBI per 162 games. Whether that will be torn up or incorporated into the new deal will be revealed soon.
