Elon Musk and Tom Cruise Want to Shoot a Movie in Space

Space program fans will remember that Cruise narrated the 2002 IMAX documentary "Space Station 3D", the first 3D live-action movie to be filmed in space. They also fit perfectly with Cruise's daring-do profile, since the actor frequently takes on his own stunts, including some of the more hair-raising epic scenes from the Mission Impossible series.

Deadline are reporting that he is working on the special project with NASA and none other than Mr Space X himself, Elon Musk.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed by tweet that "NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA's ambitious plans a reality".

Since 2000, rotating crews of astronauts and cosmonauts have lived aboard the ISS on a continuous basis.

Russian Federation is the only country with the ability to fly humans to and from the space station, but SpaceX and Boeing have been working for years to develop spacecraft capable of returning that capability to the United States. On May 27, SpaceX's spacecraft, Crew Dragon, is expected to complete its first astronaut mission to the station in nearly a decade.

Last year, NASA issued a directive that laid out plans to allow non-government individuals to pay the space agency to use the International Space Station's facilities. However, this was after a stellar career in the military and many years of training for space flight. Speaking of hanging, Cruise clung to the side of a plane in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation. and he's not scared of heights considering he climbed the Burj Khalifa (in Dubai) in Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Filming was halted for a time after he hurt his ankle while shooting a rooftop-to-rooftop jump in Mission Impossible: Fallout, a film in which he also hung from a flying helicopter. The disease later led to a worldwide shutdown of Hollywood movie and TV production and the closure of movie theatres.
