FAA Orders Thousands Of Boeing 737s To Undergo Emergency Inspections

FAA Orders Thousands Of Boeing 737s To Undergo Emergency Inspections”

The FAA said operators must inspect any 737 that has been parked for at least seven days or been flown fewer than 11 times since being returned to service.

The FAA's emergency air worthiness directive orders inspections of older 737 Classic and Next Generation planes that may have been in storage as a result of sharply reduced air travel demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Corrosion of the valves on both engines could lead to a complete loss of power without the ability to restart the engines, forcing pilots to land somewhere other than an airport, the FAA said in the order, dated Thursday.

In a statement, Boeing says that "with airplanes being stored or used infrequently due to lower demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, the valve can be more susceptible to corrosion".

Boeing said it is providing inspection and replacement information to fleet owners if they find an issue. However, the grounded Boeing 737MAX planes have moved towards flying again as USA regulators recently agreed to accept public comments on a plan to recertify the jet.

The FAA did not provide details about the four cases of engine shutdowns.

Alaska Airlines said one of its aircraft is likely one of the four incidents, noting a recent engine shutdown issue. "The inspection has already been completed on all six of our B737 aircraft".

Ajay Singh-controlled SpiceJet, which is the largest operator of Boeing 737 planes, has 82 such aircraft in its fleet, according to data from the airline's website.

We've covered here how much work goes into keeping stored aircraft in good condition, and for the most part those procedures do the job - even as an unprecedented number of planes have been parked worldwide.

United Airlines and Delta Air Lines also said they are complying and do not anticipate an impact on operations.

As things stand, Boeing's 737MAX planes, 13 of which are operated by SpiceJet, remain grounded after regulators across the world forbid the usage of the aircraft following two fatal crashes. One example was the 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson", in which US Airways pilots landed their plane on the Hudson River in NY after bird strikes knocked out both engines.
