More than 10,000 health workers infected in Africa

More than 10,000 health workers infected in Africa”

The world's hardest-hit country registered 73,795 new cases of COVID-19 and 1,157 additional deaths.

"Interest in traditional medicine as potential remedies for COVID-19 is growing in Africa", Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, was quoted in the statement as saying.

"This has very real consequences for the individuals who work in them, and there is no more sobering example of this than the rising number of health worker infections.

The increasing numbers of infectivity amongst health professionals, coupled with limited or lack of consistent supply of resources, results in refusal to attend patients". Surging global demand for protective equipment as well as global restrictions on travel has triggered supply shortages.

Up to date, a total of 409,568 patients have won the battle against their brutal COIVD-19 infection and been therefor discharged from hospitals, the continental disease control and prevention agency stated.

"One infection among health workers is one too many". "Doctors, nurses and other health professionals are our mothers, brothers and sisters".

The report said the COVID-19 outbreak had continued to evolve in the WHO African Region since it was first detected in Algeria on February 25.

WHO has been working closely with health ministries to reduce health worker infections since the outbreak began.

World Health Organization is also helping to fill gaps in the supply of personal protective equipment.

Moeti says more than 2 million items of PPE, including masks, goggles and gloves, have been shipped to African countries so far, with many more in the pipeline.

"Shipment for an initial set of 23 African countries are planned to start this weekend".

The Africa CDC had earlier this week said that some 40 African countries are still under "full border closure" while night-time curfew has been activated across around 34 countries in an effort to halt the spread of the infectious virus.

In Gauteng alone, 3 246 public servants including health workers have tested positive for Covid-19 since March, according to Gauteng health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku. Cote d'Ivoire has reduced the proportion of infections among health workers from 6.1% to 1.4%.

Speaking about the experiences of health workers in Ghana and around the continent, worldwide maternal health and midwifery specialist, Dr Jemima A Dennis-Antwi says that medical staff have refused to attend patients due to lack of resources.

Health workers need to protect themselves by constantly getting educated about the virus while also adhering to prevention protocols.
