St Vincent and the Grenadines under Hurricane Watch

St Vincent and the Grenadines under Hurricane Watch”

Gonzalo was moving at 18 miles per hour (30 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center's Friday morning update.

The Hurricane Center said that those in the Windward Islands should monitor the storm as it is expected to approach the islands late Friday and Saturday.

Wednesday morning, the storm was more than 1,200 miles east of the Windward Islands.

A Hurricane Watch continues for Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Atlantic hurricane season only began last month, but six storms have already ripped through the area, and Gonzalo may end up one of the worst.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for Tobago and Grenada and its dependencies.

NOAA is warning of a possible storm surge along the Texas coast, and possible heavy rains up to the Louisiana coast.

The current Hurricane Douglas track takes the storm's path toward Hawaii by Saturday night.

The system is becoming better organized and will likely become a tropical depression by Thursday morning and could easily become a minimal tropical storm "Hanna" before landfall sometime on Saturday.

The NHC said additional strengthening is expected until the system makes landfall. Much of the rest of eastern Texas will experience bands of tropical downpours.

Rainfall in Barbados and the Windward Islands could lead to life-threatening flash floods. "Texas does need storms like this to prevent recurring droughts but that doesn't mean there won't be isolated pockets of bad flooding".

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Greg Michel said at a Thursday press conference that Gonzalo could be the first hurricane this year to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the NOAA's hurricane wing, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Gonzalo may graduate from tropical storm to hurricane.

Beyond that, the computer models differ. This is in line with all of the seasonal forecasts from various organizations warning it's likely to be one of the most active hurricane seasons on record in the Atlantic.
