Trump and GOP ally vow Confederate base names won't change

Trump and GOP ally vow Confederate base names won't change”

"Now we must meet in conference with the House to iron out some differences and develop a unified defense bill that enhances national security and provides our troops with decisive, lasting advantages and powerful, force-multiplying assets", said Ranking Member Jack Reed (D-R.I.) about the bill's next steps.

"This is some serious revisionist history", NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent Garrett Haake added. 'The president's focus is he wants to get money into people's pockets now.,' he said.

Afterward, Mnuchin declared that the administration had reached a "fundamental agreement" with Senate Republicans. Republicans have argued that the benefit is larger than many workers' previous salaries and are a disincentive to return to their old jobs. Nevertheless, it appears that conservatives have, tentatively, agreed to at least a two month extension of benefits, albeit likely with a lower weekly pay-out.

"It's our understanding that there will be multiple bills introduced", Mnuchin said. The bills will also include tax breaks for businesses to hire and retain workers, and to help shops and workplaces retool with new safety protocols.

In his bid for reelection, Trump has come out strong in defense of controversial statues and landmarks - many of them honoring leaders of the Confederacy - that have gotten renewed scrutiny in the wake of George Floyd's death and nationwide protests demanding racial justice. Unemployed Americans are now receiving $600 more a week in jobless benefits to offset the economic devastation of the pandemic.

Millions of Americans are set to see their unemployment benefits decrease if Congress can't find a way to extend the boosted payments by the end of the week. However, Democrats and Republicans differ on key spending parameters of the bill. Republicans refused to start negotiating until this month.

President Trump even went as far as to say he might not sign the bill without the proposal. "So, the president's preference is to make sure that we send out direct payments quickly".

However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said federal lawmakers weren't ready to release the details. The total cost of the package is estimated at $1 trillion. It also includes $25 billion for coronavirus testing.

McConnell previously said he would like to see another stimulus check included in the new bill, however it's not yet known how much it will be for and who it will go to.

The Democratic proposal included $1 trillion to help states and cities deal with massive budget shortfalls caused by the economic shock from the pandemic, though the GOP proposal includes no such funding. Instead, it would only give local leaders more flexibility on how they can spend the $150 billion Congress allocated back in March. Democrats strongly oppose such a measure.

"We should not be quibbling on $200, $400 or $600 when people are in desperate need and have great uncertainty", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview on CNBC on Wednesday.
