Apple co-founder Wozniak sues YouTube, Google, over Bitcoin rip-off

Apple co-founder Wozniak sues YouTube, Google, over Bitcoin rip-off”

YouTube's refusal to take action to stop the Bitcoin giveaway scams caused irreparable damage to the plaintiffs' reputation while YouTube users were defrauded of millions of dollars, the court document stated.

Wozniak sued both YouTube and its parent company Alphabet along with 17 other alleged victims of the scam.

The lawsuit, however, praised Twitter for acting "swiftly and decisively" to shut down malicious accounts and "protect its users from the scam" after the micro-blogging platform faced a cryptocurrency hack, in which a host of verified Twitter accounts owned by well-known public figures posted a Bitcoin giveaway message.

It's similar to a scam that surfaced on Twitter last week when hackers hijacked the accounts of more than 100 prominent people, including Gates, Musk, former President Barack Obama and Joe Biden, this year's Democratic Party nominee for president.

"In stark contrast, the complaint alleges that YouTube knowingly allowed the Bitcoin scam to go on for months promoted it and profited from it by selling targeted advertising". He further states that YouTube has not responded to several requests to have the fraudulent videos taken down.

In the lawsuit, Wozniak's lawyers allege that a Bitcoin scam similar to the one that hit Twitter has been doing rounds on YouTube, tricking people into paying money - by using the name and likeness of Woz.

The footage of the aforementioned businessmen was used in live YouTube streams to persuade the viewers that they're hosting live cryptocurrency giveaway events in honor of the 2020 Bitcoin halving.

Ripple also said that it hired external cybersecurity and digital threat intelligence vendor to help with reporting and takedown efforts as the number of scams with the company's name has increased lately.

YouTube said it removed 2.2 million videos and terminated 1.7 million accounts all around the most important three months of this yr for violating its insurance policies against false practices.

Mr Wozniak accused YouTube of failing to deal with the problem.

YouTube, like other internet platforms, is protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

In a statement on July 21, YouTube's legal team said in its defense that it was not liable for any content on its platform, scams included, making it clear where YouTube sees its jurisdiction and responsibilities begin and end. It means that, for instance, a person could post a defamatory video on YouTube and YouTube itself could not be sued for the views contained in that video.

There are also scams on Facebook of fake KFC pages that say they are giving free "KFC stay home food vouchers" if you fill up a questionnaire.
