During the almost weeklong memorial events, Lewis' body will lie in state at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta and the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Rev. Darryl Caldwell speaks as the casket of the late Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., lies in repose during a service celebrating "The Boy from Troy" at Troy University on Saturday, July 25, 2020, in Troy, Ala.

The congressman's family, friends and the public celebrated his life and legacy of fighting for human rights in the U.S.

Saturday's memorial was held in Lewis's hometown, where his loved ones gathered to celebrate the "Boy from Troy". "He worked a lifetime to help others".

Celebrations of the life of Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., continue Sunday morning, the second of six days honoring the late civil rights icon who died at the age of 80 on July 17 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

This will be open to the public, and Lewis' family has requested that visitors wear face masks and mouth coverings.

Later that day events will move to the state capital of Montgomery, where Lewis will lie in state.

He was one of the "Big Six" civil rights leaders, which included Martin Luther King Jr, and helped organise the historic 1963 March on Washington.

The letter from Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted, "Congressman Lewis will be forever etched in our memories and in the annals of the history of the United States of America, and indeed the world, for the prominent role he played and the indelible mark he made in the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, which arose out of the need and desire for equality and freedom for African Americans".

After the service, the hearse with Lewis' casket arrived at a chapel in Selma, Alabama, for a private remembrance.

Lewis will be buried on Thursday in Atlanta after a private service.

Lewis was 25 years old when activists marched across the bridge.

The civil rights movement led Lewis into a career in politics. He served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia's fifth district.
