David Letterman, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kelly Ripa and more remember Regis Philbin

David Letterman, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kelly Ripa and more remember Regis Philbin”

Regis Philbin's family confirmed the news of his death to People through a statement.

After graduating from Notre Dame university with a degree in sociology and serving in the U.S. Navy, Philbin worked his way up the ladder of television, taking jobs as a page, a stagehand, a news writer, a radio and TV reporter, and then finally, a television talk show personality.

"We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60-year career".

Philbin entertained audiences with his quick wit and enthusiastic interview style in a career that spanned more than six decades, most notably as host of daytime's "Live!" and the USA version of the popular game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire".

Philbin died Friday, just over a month before his 89th birthday.

"I knew if you were there", Letterman told Philbin, a frequent guest, in an interview more than a decade later, "we could make something of that".

Amid an outpouring of tributes, Jimmy Kimmel tweeted that Philbin was "a great broadcaster, a good friend and a tremendous amount of fun".

"He could do it all, and we loved him for it", King wrote. He told ABC's 20/20 programme in 2001 that he left the Live! talk show in part because the contract offered to him "wasn't what I expected or I thought I deserved".

Kathie Lee continued: "It brings me great comfort knowing that he had a personal relationship with his Lord that brought him great peace". He started off with Tempo, a three-hour morning show on Los Angeles local network KHJ-TV, moved to a different morning show in Chicago, and even tried his hand at a couple other talk shows for a Midwest CBS affiliate and NBC. He was the ultimate class act, bringing his laughter and joy into our homes every day on Live for more than 23 years. There has never been anyone like him. We were beyond lucky to have him as a mentor in our careers and aspire every day to fill his shoes on the show. Gifford remained his co-host for 15 years before Philbin was partnered with perky former soap opera actress Ripa for 11 years. "We will miss you Regis".

Together, they had two children, daughter Amy in 1961, and son Daniel in 1967, per Closer Weekly.
