Ma of all summons over ‘fake news’

Ma of all summons over ‘fake news’”

A court of India has issued summons to Alibaba and its founder Jack Ma and ordered to appear in the court.

In Gurugram a district court has summoned Alibaba and its founder Jack Ma after a former employee has filed a complaint in which he alleged that he was sacked as he objected to fake news and censorship on the company apps, according to the document accessed by the Reuters. After which he is removed from the company.

A Gurgaon court docket has summoned Chinese firm Alibaba and its founder Jack Ma.

The development has come after India banned 59 Chinese apps including UC News, UC Browser amidst the border tension between India and China.

According to a report in Reuters, court filings showed that the ex-employee, identified as Pushandra Singh Parmar, alleged that Alibaba's subsidiary companies - UC Browser and UC News, would censor content that could be considered unfavourable to China and also promoted fake news.

In greater than 200 pages of court docket filings, reviewed by Reuters, former worker Mr Parmar included clippings of some posts showcased on the UC News app that he alleged have been false.

Pushpendra Parmar, who was employed with the Alibaba-backed UCWeb in Gurugram, Haryana between August 2016 and November 2017, has claimed $268,000 in damages. The judge also asked for written responses from the company and executives within 30 days. According to them, a post from 2017 was headlined: "2,000-rupee notes to be banned from midnight today". Another headline of a 2018 post stated: "Just now: War broke out between India and Pakistan" and contained description of firing throughout the disputed border between the global locations.

A former employee of the company has said that a fake news is being spread on the company's app, against which the employee spoke and then he was sacked. "[But] We are unable to comment on ongoing litigation".

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a list of 59 Chinese apps that are now banned in the country.

"In order to control any news related content to be published against China was automatically/manually rejected by an audit system evolved for this goal", the plea added.

Comments will be moderated. Final decision will be at the discretion of the Taipei Times.
