Minister Grant Shapps faces quarantine over Spanish holiday

Minister Grant Shapps faces quarantine over Spanish holiday”

People already on holiday in Spain were being urged to return home as normal and check the Foreign Office " s advice pages for further information.

It follows an upsurge in coronavirus cases in a number of regions in Spain.

The decision, also made by the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland and Wales - as well as the UK Government, has been made to reduce the risk of the transmission of the virus by those travelling from Spain and arriving in Scotland.

Travellers, even those from exempt destinations, are still required to complete a passenger locator form when they arrive in the UK.

"The Balearic Islands' government has been working over the last few hours to establish the basis for a safe air corridor with the United Kingdom, following the British government's quarantine imposition for all holidaymakers returning from Spain".

"We appreciate that this will be disappointing".

Health Minister Robin Swann said the decision was "not taken lightly".

"Following a significant change over the last week in both the level and pace of change in confirmed cases, Spain has been removed from the list of countries where people do not have to self-isolate when arriving into to the United Kingdom", the Department for Transport said in a statement.

"We've always been clear that we would act immediately to remove a country where necessary".

The Foreign Office is now advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain.

He added: All those people who travelled to Spain on holiday last week believing they would be able to go to work when they got back will now be forced to quarantine for two weeks.

Neil Hunter, 45, from Sittingbourne in Kent, booked a 10-day break to Lanzarote last December.

On Thursday, the Spanish health ministry reported 971 new daily infections, the biggest daily increase since Spain's lockdown ended.

"I won't be booking a summer holiday at this point, let's put it that way".

The Catalonia regional government has shut nightlife venues in Barcelona.

The quarantine imposition came as PHE, which was involved in the Spain decision, found itself under-fire from senior Tories for its failure to own up to leadership mistakes during the handling of the pandemic, according to a Sunday Telegraph report.

The news comes ahead of the launch of Northern Ireland's contact tracing app, Stop Covid NI, towards the end of next week.
