Nasa launches Lunar Loo challenge

Nasa launches Lunar Loo challenge”

With the return to the Moon set for 2024, NASA says it needs an updated version of a "Lunar Loo" that will function in both lunar gravity and microgravity.

Project manager in charge of the Lunar Loo Challenge, Mike Interbartolo, has indeed stated that this initiative is necessary for "Don't forget the needs of our astronauts" and to offer a sustainable presence on the Moon and perhaps in the future on Mars.

Now the U.S. space agency is calling on the world's inventors to develop a toilet that works not just in microgravity, but also lunar gravity on a future lunar lander spacecraft, as part of its plans to return to the Moon by 2024 under the Artemis mission. It's already working on miniaturization of existing versions in-house. And whoever designs a space toilet for the moon will receive $35,000.

As of now, most astronauts use space diapers but the agency is hoping to stumble upon creative ideas that their own engineers and scientists have yet to think of. Because of this, the toilets will have to work in microgravity and lunar gravity which is one-sixth of Earth's gravity. It's no guarantee that NASA will use the design submitted with the entry, however, the area agency is hoping to get some inspiration for its lunar toilet design, which means you could still be a part of history even if it's Moon poop history. Selected designs may be modified for integration into Artemis lunar landers. Don't get me wrong, NASA has plenty of experience building toilets for space. And while the Space Station does indeed feature a cosmic can (there are numerous YouTube video tours), it is designed for microgravity only. But they also want ideas from people that will approach the problem with a mindset different from traditional aerospace engineering.

The company issued its contact on HeroX, a system exactly where organizations can use crowdsourcing to discover "innovative solutions" to sophisticated difficulties. The contest guidelines note that emesis (throw up) bags will be the primary option for doing so. The three best under-18 designers will be given instead NASA official certificates and merchandise for the occasion, as well as public recognition.

It plans to announce winners on September 30 for the adult category and on October 20 for the junior division.
