Ontario considering mandatory farm worker coronavirus testing as Windsor-area cases surge

Ontario considering mandatory farm worker coronavirus testing as Windsor-area cases surge”

That number comes on top of the 32 new cases identified by the health unit on Saturday as the numbers continue to remain troubling for the region.

The province reported 138 confirmed cases Saturday, down from the 195 cases reported Friday.

Over the past 10 days, the province has seen the daily case count range between 103 and 203.

There was one new death, bringing the total to 2,759.

Pereira adds that she's willing to get tested for COVID-19 voluntarily for peace of mind, but making it mandatory for migrant workers sends a different message.

Thirty patients have been in intensive care and 21 are on ventilators.

After seeing an uptick in hospitalizations on Thursday, the number of patients in hospital has decreased to 141 as of Friday.

Ahmed said the surge may be attributable to loosened public health restrictions that took effect when the region entered Stage 2 of the provincial economic recovery plan weeks ago. As was the case on Friday, 66 per cent of new cases on Saturday are under the age of 40. A full 16 are reporting no cases at all, Elliott said.

According to Sunday's epidemiological summary, there are 26 new infections in Ottawa, 25 in Windsor-Essex, 39 in Toronto and 12 in Peel Region.

Despite the outbreaks, Ford said he's still hopeful he'll be able to announce Wednesday that Toronto, Windsor-Essex and Peel can move to Stage 3.

The Windsor-Essex area now has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases in Ontario, local health officials said Friday, as Premier Doug Ford said he is considering mandatory testing for farm workers in a bid to contain the spread of the surging virus.
