S. Korea records over 100 new COVID-19 cases, count reaches 14,092”

The country recorded 41 new cases on Friday, 28 were domestic infections while 13 were people arriving from overseas, taking the toll to 13,979.

As the coronavirus spread around the world, a significant number of South Korea's infections have been found in people arriving from overseas, with almost 70 per cent of the imported cases South Korean nationals.

Since Jan. 3, the country has tested more than 1.51 million people, among whom 1,484,861 tested negative for the virus and 19,681 are being checked. Since June, South Korea has detected at least 78 virus cases from eight Russian ships docked here.

But health authorities have battled a small but steady number of flare-ups.

Of 27 locally transmitted cases, 11 were from the capital city of Seoul.

As for locally transmitted cases, five each were registered in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and one each in Busan and Gwangju.

South Korea has been dealing with a virus resurgence since easing social distancing guidelines in mid-April.

The country will gradually allow spectators to attend sports events starting with baseball games on Saturday. Over the previous two weeks, meetings other than regular worship services had been banned.

So far, 12,890 people, or 91.1 percent, have been released from quarantine upon making full recoveries, up 24 from a day earlier.

As the coronavirus has spread around the world, a significant number of South Korea's infections have been found in people arriving from overseas, with almost 70% of the imported cases South Korean nationals, while more than 15% of the total infections were imported cases. The overall fatality rate stands at 2.11 percent - 2.48 percent for men and 1.8 percent for women.

South Korea carried out 1,518,634 tests since January 3.
