'Social media giants must act faster on hate speech after Wiley posts'

'Social media giants must act faster on hate speech after Wiley posts'”

The Campaign Against Antisemitism accused Twitter of moving too slowly to remove offensive content.

The 41-year-old rapper, whose real name is Richard Cowie, has almost half a million followers on his Twitter account, which is now suspended. He received a United Kingdom government honour for his contribution to music in 2018.

In a string of tweets on Friday, he said: "Listen to me Jewish community Israel is not your country I'm sorry ..."

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, which condemned the tweets as "conspiracy theories" and "antisemitic venom".

However, Wiley, whose real name is Richard Cowie, disputed this claim on Instagram, saying it was he who cut ties with Woolf.

In a tweet on Sunday, Priti Patel said: "The antisemitic posts from Wiley are abhorrent".

As a result, singers like Beverley Knight and Jessie Ware, Doctor Who star Tracy-Ann Oberman and a host of other soap stars, actors, academics and politicians have all pledged to boycott Twitter for 48 hours, starting on Monday morning.

Twitter previously said Wiley's account had been temporarily locked "for violating our hateful conduct policy", while Facebook said there was "no place for hate speech on Instagram".

The announcement came a few hours after he tweeted that he was "talking to him privately" and wanted to "educate".

The Hope not Hate watchdog said in a statement that Twitter needed to take responsibility.

In a tweet that also appeared to be referencing Wiley, former Labour Party MP and current Independent Adviser to the British Government on Anti-Semitism, Lord John Mann said that legislation was needed to hold Twitter to account.

"We are treating this as a very serious matter which must be met with the firmest of responses".

"We consider that Wiley has committed the offence of incitement to racial hatred, which can carry a substantial prison sentence", a statement read.

"Wiley has many hundreds of thousands of followers on social media and we have seen today that many of them truly believe the unhinged hatred that he is spreading", the statement continued.
