ACC reportedly discussing 11-game college football schedule with late start”

First off, there is no guarantee football will take place this fall.

According to TMG's Tony Barnhart, the ACC presidents will meet Wednesday to discuss a trio of scheduling options. They had an annual series with MI and repeatedly loaded their schedule with Big Ten teams.

The ACC is expected to formally adopt a new football schedule by the end of the month - and one is emerging as the favorite per multiple reports.

While rumors swirl nationally about postponing the season until spring, it appears that the ACC, SEC and Big 12 are pushing hard to have fall football, though the start of the season could be pushed back into later in September or to October. Should those three leagues all play plus-one games, those contests will most likely be against Power Five schools from within those three conferences since the Big 10 and Pac-12 have already declared they will play conference-only games and no nonconference games.

Sure enough the Pac-12 quickly announced the same and before you knew it, Notre Dame had lost three of their 12 scheduled opponents for 2020.

If Notre Dame ever had to join a conference for even the shortest amount of time this has the chance to be about as flawless as one could hope.

Therefore, all discussions have centered on a conference-only model with one nonconference game.

Schedule-makers are already anticipating a matchup between Miami and Notre Dame, teams that haven't played since 2017 when the No. 6 Hurricanes stunned the No. 3 Irish by a 41-8 score in Miami. One of those issues would be whether or not the Irish could play for the ACC Championship, and then there's how revenue sharing would work because Notre Dame has its unique TV contract with NBC.

Notre Dame has been a member of the ACC since 2014 for all sports but football and hockey.

We thought right away that Notre Dame's sweetheart deal with the ACC would provide the flawless life raft and even proposed a 10 game ACC schedule for the Irish. Geographically and financially, among other things, Notre Dame was a Big Ten school.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick declined comment when contacted by the AP via text. Of that 11-game schedule, 10 games would be conference games - perhaps in a pod-like format. The Irish needed to win more to match lofty expectations but they didn't need the Big Ten or any other conference.

Moving to a conference-only, plus-one schedule also ensures opponents have uniform coronavirus testing guidelines, stressing the need to have all teams adhere to the same testing and safety standards.
