Omar To Boycott Elections Till Statehood Restored”

Abdullah pointed out that after the reelection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2019, there had been rumours that Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status would be revoked.

In the op-ed, Omar questions numerous reasons cited by the ruling BJP and its leaders for the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and relegating it to the status of a UT.

"If the reason for carving out a separate Union Territory for Ladakh was the public demand among the Buddhist population of the area, then the demand for a separate state for the people of Jammu is a much older demand", Abdullah said.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah outside his house talking to reporters after being released from detention after eighty months on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

The celebration will take place on August 5 for 15 days.

Mr. Abdullah, who is the vice president of the NC, was critical of what had been done to Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 a year ago, and said his party would oppose it in the Supreme Court.

In his article, Omar said that the special status of J&K "was not a favour done to the state" and that "it formed the basis of the state's accession to India".

Bharatiya Janata Party has written to the president of state units to organise events on one-year completion of abrogation of Article 370 and the Triple Talaq Bill becoming an Act. That trust will come only when the statehood is restored and other changes are reversed.

The legislation passed by Parliament and the subsequent orders issued by the President were "unconstitutional", it has submitted in the apex court which has set up a five-member bench to hear the matter.

"I hope that not only that Aug 5 will be observed as Black Day across Pakistan, but also an all party conference will be held immediately afterwards to [discuss and] agree at solid and practical steps for settlement of Kashmir", he wrote to these leaders.

Abdullah said the National Conference will continue to oppose the revocation of the special status of the Union Territory, including in the Supreme Court.

"We believe in democracy and peaceful opposition". "Sadly these very democratic rights were trampled on a year ago".

The abrogation of Article 370 was supposed to end terrorism but the government had been telling Supreme Court that violence in Jammu and Kashmir was increasing, he said. Through a Presidential Order, the government declared that Article 370 would cease to be operative, and specifically overrode a previous order that made Article 35A a part of the Constitution of India, thereby ending the special status accorded to the region. "No one can be forced to fight an election against their will". It's not a meeting I will forget in a hurry. I can not and will not be a member of what is now one of the most disempowered assemblies in the country. "We are a democratic mainstream party and will use all democratic means at our disposal".

He added that "the orchestrated campaign" against mainstream political parties in the country's national media, "particularly at the hands of the ruling dispensation", has left his party wondering "whether the sacrifices were worth it".

On Wednesday, a meeting of senior leaders was held in which the party chose to rope in people who were benefited by the abrogation of Article 370, especially Valmikis, Gorkhas and West Pakistani refugees.
