Victoria records 10 deaths, 459 COVID-19 cases”

Premier Daniel Andrews said there had also been six further coronavirus deaths, while 44 people were battling the infection in intensive care.

"These things change rapidly, but we have to say these numbers are far too high", Andrews said.

Andrews implored people to follow the rules, especially workers who are still going to work even when they have symptoms.

The latest victims were aged between their 40s and 80s, with seven of the deaths occurring in care homes. "And therefore, people will die".

The joint response will include Australian Defence Force resources, the aged care regulator, and state and federal government resources and emergency management experts, the health minister Greg Hunt said yesterday.

"Whilst we have overall capacity and we've worked very hard all throughout the year to grow the number of people that can be available for our fight against this virus in a clinical sense, whenever we have clinical staff and other critical health workers away, furloughed because they are a close contact or in fact as an active case, that does put some additional pressure on our system".

Victoria's previous daily record for new coronavirus infections was 484 on 22 July.

The second-most populous state reported 532 new cases of the virus which causes COVID-19, the most new cases in a day since the pandemic arrived in Australia, and six more deaths, taking the state toll to 77, nearly half the national death toll.

Coronavirus is now "deeply embedded" in Victoria and will take a while to control, according to health authorities. Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, has spent the last two weeks under strict lockdown.

Those numbers are not doubling on a week-by-week basis, we have reached a relatively steady state for the moment of numbers between about 350 and 450 per day.

Other Victorians are expected to wear masks when the 1.5m social distancing can't be done. Nearly three-quarters of the state's 8,696 infections have occurred since the restrictions were reinforced, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

"Lockdown will not end until people stop going to work with symptoms", he told reporters.
