Garth Brooks removes himself from CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year consideration

Garth Brooks removes himself from CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year consideration”

Brooks says he is pulling himself out of nominations for the Country Music Association's entertainer of the year award, saying it's time for someone else to win the top prize.

If he is nominated again, he is asking CMA members not to vote for him.

Thirty-year superstar Garth Brooks told reporters today that he will not run for re-election as Entertainer of the Year at this year's Country Music Association Awards. The latter two are past winners of the CMA's Entertainer of the Year Award, but 2005 American Idol victor Underwood is 0-for-2 in her nominations.

Despite his legendary career and dominance in the category, Brooks' win came as a shock to many fans and industry watchers who had predicted that Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood would win the top prize in 2019 and become the first female entertainer of the year since 2011.

Brooks noted in this morning's virtual presser that seven is his lucky number.

Touching on the backlash he received on social media after his 2019 win, he explained, "It made winning Entertainer of the Year not that fun, to tell you the truth".

Brooks said that following his win a year ago, he read criticism online that said he should step down from the category. As announced last December, Carrie Underwood has stepped down as the ceremony's host after 12 years.

It remains to be seen if Brooks will end up on the 2020 ballot, as the first round of voting has already been completed, with the second of three nomination forms due to be sent to voters on Friday. "The long-standing CMA Awards rules do not allow individuals to remove themselves from the balloting process at any point", the CMA said in a statement.
