China`s Huawei overtakes Samsung as top smartphone seller

China`s Huawei overtakes Samsung as top smartphone seller”

If you'd told me Huawei would rise to be the world's biggest smartphone vendor this time a year ago, I would have laughed you out of the room, and yet here we are. As a result, the Chinese company has a almost non-existent market share in the US.

The news might come as a surprise to many since the US' ban on Huawei has still not been lifted, making the company's products less appealing due to the lack of Google's services despite having incredible hardware features, especially in the camera department.

Huawei has long harbored ambitions to overtake Samsung as the world's biggest smartphone seller, and going by the numbers from Canalys, that's just what happened during the April-June period this year.

"Huawei was able to attain this feat due to a unique market scenario created because of COVID-19". "Strength in China alone will not be enough to sustain Huawei at the top once the global economy starts to recover". Samsung has less than 1% market share in China where sales rebounded, while outbreaks ravaged core markets like Brazil, India, the U.S., and Europe.

Overseas shipments, however, fell almost a third in the second quarter and Canalys analyst Mo Jia warned that strength in China alone "will not be enough to sustain Huawei at the top once the global economy starts to recover". While the growth in second-quarter smartphone shipments was in triple digits compared to Q1 deliveries, on a year-over-year basis the Q2 growth in smartphone shipments was a puny 1.4%. Samsung is looking to rebound in Q3 2020 on the back of the Galaxy Note 20 series, and it should retake the lead once global markets stabilize.

It was also the first quarter in nine years that a brand other than Apple or Samsung has led the global market, according to Canalys. The South Korean firm sold 53.7 million units in the last quarter.

"The new SE found success as it managed to effectively target the lower-priced segment, which bodes extremely well for the vendor in this time of crisis where consumers are shifting towards more budget-friendly devices", IDC said.

Huawei said in a statement it was a sign of "exceptional resilience". But shipments within China were up by 8-percent.
