Hong Kong blocks 12 activists from polls

Hong Kong blocks 12 activists from polls”

The Hong Kong government is invoking an emergency ordinance in delaying the elections.

The government has forecast a contraction of 9.2% in 2020, surpassing the fall during Spain's 2008-2013 financial crisis, and has said it expects 6.8% growth in 2021.

"We want to ensure fairness and public safety and health, and need to make sure the election is held in an open, fair and impartial manner".

Lam said she will ask the National People's Congress Standing Committee, which serves as China's legislative body for most of the year, to consider issuing a ruling extending the term of the current legislature by a year.

The disqualifications are a setback for pro-democracy activists, who aimed to win a majority of seats in the legislative council.

The disqualifications were criticized by Joshua Wong and other pro-democracy advocates, and that has only been exacerbated by the decision to delay the election as they questioned the legality of the delay.

"Otherwise, it is tantamount to uprooting the foundation of the establishment of the SAR".

Around half of Hong Kong's 3,100 COVID-19 cases have been detected in the past month and authorities fear hospitals are on the verge of being overwhelmed.

Hong Kong's government has reversed a day-old ban on restaurants serving dine-in customers that was introduced to control the spread of coronavirus, following widespread public anger, The Guardian reports.

They are already reeling from the government's imposition of a Beijing-imposed national security law last month, which has been widely criticized and let to punitive measures by the Trump administration.

Hong Kong is going through its most politically turbulent period since its return to Chinese rule, and previous year seven straight months of pro-democracy protests swept the city.

"This simply allows Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam to deny Hong Kong people their right to choose their government", she said, adding it was a "political choice" by Lam not to move to postal or electronic voting. Others have been arrested for possessing or shouting independence and other protest slogans.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on a radio show in the US on Thursday that the elections in Hong Kong "must proceed on time".

Meanwhile, global tech giants with a presence in Hong Kong, such as Facebook and Google, are evaluating the impact of the security law that gives China authority to demand that they turn over user data or censor content seen as violating the law - even when posted from overseas.

An announcement could come as soon as Friday evening, multiple Hong Kong newspapers and TV stations said.

Prominent pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong gave a statement to the press today (July 31) after being barred from running as a candidate in Hong Kong's upcoming election.

Four Hong Kong students involved in a recently disbanded pro-independence group were arrested by police on Wednesday under a controversial new national security law, officers and members of the group said.

I wish to emphasise that no reasonable man would think that this election ban is not politically driven.

The firm's announcement comes after China enacted a national security law for Hong Kong, which has stirred worries over its future as a hub for global business.

The postponement drew criticism from the New York-based group Human Rights Watch.

Among the provisions was the possibility for the Hong Kong government to extradite criminal suspects to mainland China.
