Tesla Open To License Powertrain, Software and Batteries To Competitors

Tesla Open To License Powertrain, Software and Batteries To Competitors”

Separately, in a recent video, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk extended an invitation to those interested in working for Tesla China, revealing that his company builds teams that "will be doing original design and engineering in China".

Volkswagen has been quite open about the fact that it has fallen behind when it comes to software and that Tesla has taken the lead. In fact, both Mercedes-Benz and Toyota have partnered with Tesla and used its battery and electric drivetrain technology, but at the time both automakers had made sizable investments into Musk's company. "We're just trying to accelerate sustainable energy, not crush competitors!".

An expert on Tesla's moves Brandon Knoblauch created an interesting chart that compares the Texas Gigafactory in land size to Tesla's other auto manufacturing sites.

"Of course, that hasn't stopped Tesla from taking aim at potential competitors via legal action on occasion - it filed suit against electric automaker Rivian and four of its former employees last week, alleging theft of trade secrets and poaching key talent". This throws light on the upcoming EV market the world over and shows that startups, too, are looking to manufacture industry-grade vehicles.

Tesla now runs a battery joint venture with Panasonic Corp and also sources batteries from China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and South Korea's LG Chem. "The strategy, if successful, will increase the EV market's dependence on Tesla", he added.

Tesla is in the process of building a battery manufacturing facility at its Fremont, California plant under a project called "Roadrunner".

In any case, batteries are the most important and costly component of an EV, so Tesla could, in theory, fetch a high price for theirs. The price tag for these batteries is set to be Dollars 100 per kWh to reach price parity with gasoline cars without subsidies.
