United Kingdom tightens lockdown in northern England”

People in the areas affected were told not to socialise with other households at home or in gardens, or to meet with other households in pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, places of worship or leisure venues.

England reported its highest number of new Covid-19 infections in more than a month yesterday.

On Thursday night the United Kingdom government announced new local lockdown measures in areas of Northern England due to a spike in coronavirus cases.

The government says police forces and councils will get powers to enforce the new rules, but that some exemptions will be put in place, including for the vulnerable.

Which areas are covered by the new rules? You may attend these venues with people you live with (or are in a support bubble with), but should avoid interaction with others.

Households may go to hospitality, for instance bars and pubs, but new guidance will make clear that two households should not go to hospitality together.

Hancock told the BBC that the government had taken the "targeted" action based on information gathered from contact tracing, which he said showed that "most of the transmission is happening between households visiting each other, and people visiting relatives and friends".

Health Secretary Matt Hancock made the announcement on Twitter and says there has been an increase in people catching the disease specifically in the north of England.

"I'm very grateful to the local Muslim leaders, the imams in fact, across the country who've been working so hard to find a way to have COVID-secure celebrations", he said.

"We take this action with a heavy heart, but we can see increasing rates of Covid across Europe and are determined to do whatever is necessary to keep people safe", he said on Twitter.

Indoor swimming pools, including indoor facilities at water parks.

The restrictions, which come into effect from midnight tonight, cover all of Greater Manchester as well as the local authority areas of Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale, Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.

The affected region has a large Muslim population, and the restrictions coincide with the Eid al-Adha holiday, where many people would normally gather in each other's homes. Everyone must continue to socially distance and regularly their wash hands to help bring this virus down further so all areas of Leicester can return to normal as soon as possible.
